Beginning your studies with Arden provides a strong foundation for a future in computing. The BSc (Hons) Computing with Foundation Year is designed to develop both your technical abilities and academic confidence, preparing you for success throughout your degree and into your professional career. As you progress through the programme, you’ll engage with advanced computing topics and gain hands-on experience that reflects the demands of today’s fast-changing technology sector.

Skilled computing professionals are in high demand across the global employment market, creating opportunities for specialisation, career advancement, and innovation. This programme is structured to support long-term skills growth, ensuring you are equipped to adapt as technology continues to evolve.

Build essential STEM and computing foundations

For students studying in the UK, the Foundation Year establishes core knowledge in programming, computer architecture, and database systems, alongside key STEM competencies. You will also develop essential academic and study skills, with ongoing support to help you transition confidently into higher-level computing modules.

What you’ll study

The curriculum focuses on industry-relevant technical skills that employers actively seek. You’ll study programming languages such as Java, Python, and PHP, along with web technologies including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Additional areas of study include database management (MySQL), cloud technologies, cyber security, data analytics, human–computer interaction, and ethical issues in computing.
To align your studies with your career ambitions, you can choose between two specialised routes: a technical pathway or an information systems pathway.

Practical, skills-focused learning

The course places strong emphasis on applied learning through hands-on modules that mirror real professional scenarios. Assessments are designed to be authentic and practical, allowing you to demonstrate your abilities rather than relying solely on theoretical exams.
You’ll gain experience in software development, database design, web applications, data analysis, and cloud-based services, creating a professional portfolio that showcases your technical expertise and readiness for a career in the technology sector.
